AT 93, WILLIE NELSON IS THE LAST HIGHWAYMAN STILL ON THE ROAD. The Highwaymen did not begin with a carefully planned business meeting. In 1984, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson traveled to Montreux, Switzerland, with their families to film a Christmas special. After the cameras stopped, the guitars came out in a hotel room. The four men started trading songs, and something immediately felt right. By 1985, they had a name, an album, and a No. 1 country song. But the most surprising part was Kris. He had already written “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and songs recorded by some of the biggest voices in music. Still, he never behaved as though he deserved more attention than the others. “For me, it was heaven,” Kris once said. “I was up there on stage with my heroes.” Kris was not actually the youngest member. Waylon was. But Kris often carried himself like the grateful kid brother who could not believe he had been invited into the room. Together, they recorded three albums across ten years.
