Seger was still years away from his major breakthrough. He and his band were driving through the Midwest late at night when they stopped for food around 2 a.m. They all had long hair. Inside, several men began mocking them, repeatedly calling them “girls.” Seger later said the band walked away because they did not want a fight to end in a police report. The next night, Seger sat in the bathroom of a cheap Holiday Inn with an acoustic guitar. The humiliation from the truck stop was still with him, but so was something bigger — the exhaustion of endless highways, strange towns, cold restaurants and missing home. That feeling became “Turn the Page.” The studio version appeared on Back in ’72, but the song truly found its audience through Seger’s 1976 Live Bullet album. Years later, thousands of people would sing it back to him. But it began with a tired young band at two in the morning, deciding it was better to walk away than fight.

Dusty Hill had been ZZ Top’s bassist since 1970. When his health finally forced him off the road in 2021, longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis stepped in. Billy later recalled Dusty grabbing his arm and telling him, “Give Elwood the bottom end, and take it to the Top.” Dusty died on July 28, 2021, at 72. Billy and Frank Beard did what their friend had asked. They kept playing. Then, five years later, Billy had to face the same kind of goodbye again. Frank, the drummer who had kept ZZ Top’s beat for 56 years, died on August 17, 2026, at 77. In announcing his death, Billy said the band would “keep on keeping on” — because that was what Frank had wanted too. Four days later, ZZ Top returned to the stage in Austin. For most of Billy’s life, he could look across a ZZ Top stage and see Dusty and Frank there. Now neither man is waiting on the other side.
