When Waylon Jennings died on February 13, 2002, at 64, the world mourned the man who pulled country music out from under Nashville’s control. Inside sat hundreds of full-band recordings Waylon cut with the Waylors between 1973 and 1984, made during downtime from touring — never released, never even labeled. He finished the mixes fully analog on a 1976 DeMedio console at his own studio, adding almost nothing to what was already on the tape. The result was Songbird, released October 3, 2025 — Waylon’s first new solo music since 2012. Shooter put it out through an imprint he named Son of Jessi, after his mother, whose vocals appear on those tapes from a session in December 1980. He has said at least two more albums are coming, and that sorting the full archive may take him five years. No cheating spouse. No lonely bar. No great tragedy. Just four men admitting that each voice mattered because it had a place beside the other three. The single stopped at No. 31. On paper, it was never one of their biggest records. But that number leaves out the part that changed everything. At their farewell concert in Salem, Virginia, in 2002, after 38 years on the road, the Statlers brought the song back near the end of the night. Lew was not there. The original tenor and co-writer had died 12 years earlier, and Jimmy Fortune now stood in his place. Harold’s deep bass was still there. Don and Phil were beside him. Together, they sang about being grateful for the chance to contribute something while they could. THE MOST VULNERABLE SONG WAYLON JENNINGS EVER SANG WAS AN APOLOGY THAT DIDN’T BELONG TO HIM. Bob McDill wrote “Amanda” in 1973, not long after landing in Nashville, and it took him roughly thirty minutes. He has described it as a subconscious apology to his own wife, for the first years of their marriage when he couldn’t give her anything. He wanted Waylon Jennings to sing it. Waylon wasn’t in the office that day, so McDill left it with the receptionist and asked her to make sure it got through. It never got past that desk. Waylon finally heard the song coming out of a radio in Don Williams’s voice, tucked on the back of another McDill tune that had climbed into the country Top 15. He called the songwriter and said, “That’s the story of my life, Hoss,” then asked why he’d never been given it. McDill told him to go look on his own receptionist’s desk. He recorded it in 1974 for The Ramblin’ Man and let it sit there, unreleased as a single, for nearly five years. Overdubs were added for his first Greatest Hits, the record went out in April 1979, and on June 30 it reached number one and held for three weeks — his eighth solo chart-topper. Country’s toughest outlaw never wrote an apology. He just needed a year, a car radio, and another man’s marriage to recognize one.

SHE MADE THE HIGHEST-CHARTING COUNTRY RECORD ANY BLACK WOMAN HAD EVER MADE, AND THE LABEL THAT PRESSED IT WAS NAMED PLANTATION. Thelma Bynem was singing R&B in South Carolina clubs when a crowd at Charleston Air Force Base asked her for country songs instead. A man named Duke Rayner heard it and called Nashville. The producer he reached, Shelby Singleton, told Ebony in 1970 exactly what he had been hunting for — a Black woman who could sing country and western. She signed with him in May 1969 and became Linda Martell. Asked later about the label’s name, she said she didn’t like it, but that was the name he wanted. Then everything worked at once. August 1969: she walked onto the Grand Ole Opry stage, the first Black woman ever to do it, and left to standing ovations. Eleven more Opry nights followed. “Color Him Father” peaked at No. 22 that September — the highest any Black woman would chart in country music for the next fifty-five years. Hee Haw. Tours with Waylon Jennings and Hank Snow. Billboard compared her to Charley Pride. Then Singleton told her he was moving his promotion behind Jeannie C. Riley. Martell said she would not play second fiddle, and left. When she tried to record elsewhere, she says he threatened to sue whoever signed her. One album. That was all she ever got to make. She left Nashville in 1974 and drove a school bus in South Carolina. America heard her voice again on March 29, 2024, in an interlude on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter — fifty-four years after Color Me Country. The first words are thank you very much, over applause.

THEY WALKED OFF A STAGE IN SALEM, VIRGINIA ON OCTOBER 26, 2002. NO ILLNESS. NO BREAKUP. NO FALLING OUT. AFTER 39 YEARS ON THE ROAD, THE STATLER BROTHERS SIMPLY DECIDED THAT WAS ENOUGH. Three Grammy Awards. Nine CMA trophies for Vocal Group of the Year. For more than thirty years they carried one of the highest-grossing touring shows in country music. They could have closed it at the Opry. They booked a 10,000-seat civic center instead. Don Reid explained the choice without ceremony: “It was the biggest place close to home that we could do.” Salem sat just down the road from Staunton, where the group had kept its headquarters from the start and never once moved to Nashville. Then, for a farewell that size, they did something almost nobody expected. The last note of the night was not a hit. It was “Amazing Grace” — the kind of song four teenagers had been singing in Staunton churches in 1955, years before anyone paid them for it. They never reunited. Nashville waited until 2008 to put them in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

HE NEVER ANNOUNCED IT FROM A STAGE. HE MAILED IT. THE LETTER WAS DATED MAY 3, 2006. NO ILLNESS. NO SCANDAL. RICKY VAN SHELTON SIMPLY ASKED TO BE RELEASED FROM EVERY SHOW HE HAD LEFT THAT YEAR. Ten No. 1 singles. Four straight albums certified platinum, every one of them topping the country albums chart. The CMA Horizon Award in 1988, then Male Vocalist of the Year in 1989 — back-to-back, handed to a former pipefitter from Grit, Virginia who did not reach Nashville until he was thirty-two. He explained it without drama, writing to fans that he and his wife Bettye were “in good health and still love music.” He wanted to be close to family. That was the whole reason. Then he kept his word. No farewell tour. No reunion single. No anniversary comeback. But the goodbye had already happened, and nobody in the building recognized it at the time. FREDDY FENDER WAS SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN ANGOLA. FIFTEEN YEARS LATER, HE HAD THE NO. 1 SONG IN BOTH COUNTRY AND POP. In 1960, Freddy Fender was arrested in Baton Rouge for marijuana possession just as his early music was beginning to get noticed. He was sentenced to five years at Louisiana’s Angola prison and served nearly three. When he came home, there was no grand return waiting for him. By the end of the decade, he was back in South Texas working as an auto mechanic, taking college classes, and playing music on weekends when he could. The dream had not disappeared. It had simply been pushed aside by work, bills, and years nobody could give back. Then producer Huey Meaux asked him to sing over a track in 1974. Fender sang part of it in English and part in Spanish. The session took only minutes. He thought that would be the end of it. It became “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” At 37, Freddy Fender reached No. 1 on both Billboard’s country chart and the Hot 100. He did not return as the young man who had gone away. He returned with enough life behind every word to make America believe him.

TIME MAGAZINE CALLED HIM THE KING OF HONKY-TONK, AND HE SPENT MOST OF HIS LIFE IN A TRAILER OUTSIDE FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA. Gary Stewart had the number one country single in America in 1975 with “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).” He had already decided Nashville wasn’t for him by then. He told a Florida paper the business had started to feel like an assembly line, so he went home and kept writing about men coming apart in barrooms. Nobody sang that particular kind of ruin better. Then it stopped being material. RCA dropped him in 1983. Alcohol and drugs took most of the decade after that. In 1988 his son Gary Joseph died by suicide at twenty-five, and Shannon Stewart has said her father shut down completely. Depression, addiction and an old back injury were all in the room at once. He kept working anyway — three albums for HighTone, ten more years on the road, a 2003 live record at Billy Bob’s that fans still argue is his best night. Mary Lou, his wife of forty-three years, died that November. Gary died three weeks later, on December 16, 2003, at 59. What’s left is the voice, and it still lands the second it starts.
