Bernie Leadon had been gone from the Eagles for nearly 38 years when the band asked him to walk back onto the stage. He was one of the four men who founded the Eagles in 1971, helping shape the country-rock sound behind their earliest records. But by 1975, the band was moving in a harder direction, and Leadon left. Joe Walsh soon took his place, and Leadon moved on with his life. Then came the History of the Eagles tour in 2013. Night after night, Leadon stood beside Glenn Frey and Don Henley again, playing the songs from the years when the Eagles were still becoming the Eagles. He remained with the tour through its final run in 2015. There was no dramatic speech and no attempt to pretend the lost years had never happened. After nearly four decades away, Bernie Leadon simply picked up his guitar and became an Eagle again.

Rik Emmett had spent years believing a real Triumph tour probably wasn’t going to happen again. Then, at 72, he found himself back on the road playing “Lay It on the Line” and “Magic Power” for crowds that had waited decades to hear them again. This wasn’t the Rik Emmett of 1983. He had survived cancer, arthritis was affecting his hands, and some of the high notes he once sang were no longer realistic. So he adapted. The guitars were tuned lower, other musicians helped carry some of the vocals, and Emmett concentrated on what he could still do. Triumph’s 2026 run became their first proper tour in roughly 30 years. That may be what made the old songs hit differently. Nobody onstage was pretending that three decades hadn’t passed. They simply found a way to play them again.

For years, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings could still play “American Woman” and “These Eyes” — but they couldn’t go on the road as The Guess Who. A long trademark dispute over the band’s name had left the two men who helped create its most famous music performing under their own names instead. That finally changed after a 2024 settlement gave Bachman and Cummings control of The Guess Who trademark. So in 2026, they did something fans had waited more than two decades to see. They went back on the road together as The Guess Who, including their first U.S. tour under that name since 2001. Bachman is now 82. Cummings is 78. They aren’t trying to rewrite what they did decades ago. They’re playing “No Time,” “These Eyes,” “American Woman” and the records people grew up with. Cummings put it simply: “Now we can go out and honor the songs.”

THE EAGLES COULD STILL SING IN PERFECT HARMONY WHILE GLENN FREY AND DON FELDER WERE THREATENING EACH OTHER BETWEEN SONGS. On July 31, 1980, the Eagles played a benefit concert for California Senator Alan Cranston at Long Beach Arena. Don Felder had objected to the band getting involved in a political fundraiser, and a tense exchange before the show pushed Glenn Frey over the edge. They still walked onstage and played. But the argument continued between songs. At one point, Felder told Frey, “Only three more songs till I kick your ass.” The band somehow finished the concert while the two men traded threats. Backstage, Felder smashed a guitar against the wall. That night became the end of the Eagles’ first era. They would not appear onstage together again until 1994. The harmonies survived the concert. The band did not.

GLENN FREY WAS RIDING WITH A DRUG DEALER WHO WAS DRIVING SO FAST HE ASKED HIM TO SLOW DOWN. THE MAN’S ANSWER BECAME AN EAGLES SONG. In the 1970s, Glenn Frey was riding to an Eagles poker game with a drug dealer the band knew as “The Count.” Frey was in the passenger seat when the car suddenly reached around 90 miles an hour. Frey told him to slow down. The dealer just grinned and answered, “Life in the fast lane.” Frey immediately knew he had a song title. Around the same time, Joe Walsh played a hard-driving guitar riff during rehearsal. Frey heard it and knew that was the music the phrase needed. Don Henley, Frey and Walsh built the song from there. The result wasn’t simply a song about driving fast. It was about drugs, money, reckless living and people pushing themselves toward destruction. The Eagles weren’t describing some distant world. They were writing about the one surrounding them.

ALICE COOPER’S DRINKING GOT SO BAD HE CHECKED INTO A NEW YORK SANITARIUM. WHEN HE CAME OUT, HE TURNED THE PEOPLE HE MET INSIDE INTO AN ALBUM. By 1977, alcohol had taken control of Alice Cooper’s life. He entered a New York sanitarium to dry out, surrounded not by rock stars, but by patients dealing with serious problems of their own. Cooper listened to their stories. He remembered their personalities, their fears and even the nurses caring for them. When he returned to music, he didn’t hide where he had been. Working with lyricist Bernie Taupin, Cooper built his 1978 album around that experience. Many of its characters were inspired by real people he had met during his stay. For a performer famous for fake executions, snakes and horror onstage, this time the darkness wasn’t an act. It came from a place he had actually lived through.

KEITH RICHARDS WAS CAUGHT WITH HEROIN IN TORONTO AND FACED THE POSSIBILITY OF YEARS IN PRISON. THEN HE WALKED INTO THE STUDIO AND SANG LIKE A MAN WHO REFUSED TO BE RUN OUT OF ROCK ’N’ ROLL. On February 27, 1977, Canadian police found about 22 grams of heroin in Keith Richards’ Toronto hotel room. He was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, and a serious prison sentence suddenly became a real possibility. The case followed Richards while the Rolling Stones were making Some Girls. He was still deep in heroin addiction, and nobody knew how the legal trouble would end. During that period, Richards went into the studio and recorded one of his most personal songs, reportedly working on it for five straight days. It wasn’t an apology. He sang about living hard, paying for his choices, and refusing to let anyone else decide when his time was up. Richards wasn’t pretending the trouble didn’t exist. He was putting it on the record.

YEARS LATER, EDDIE VEDDER TURNED THAT SHOCK INTO “ALIVE.” Eddie Vedder was a teenager when he learned that the man who had raised him was actually his stepfather. His biological father, Edward Severson, had already died from multiple sclerosis. Eddie had even met him several times as a child — but had been told he was simply a family friend. That revelation stayed with him. When Vedder later wrote the lyrics to Pearl Jam’s “Alive,” he used that experience in the song’s opening story. The song was partly autobiographical and partly fictional, but the pain behind the discovery was real. Millions eventually heard the chorus as a declaration of survival. Vedder originally heard it differently. In 2006, he explained that “I’m still alive” had once felt like a burden — almost a curse. Then Pearl Jam’s audiences began shouting it back at him with joy. “They lifted the curse,” Vedder said. The fans had changed the meaning of his own song.

DECADES LATER, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FINALLY GAVE HER SOMETHING BACK — A SONG. Bruce Springsteen grew up in Freehold, New Jersey. His mother, Adele, worked as a legal secretary and helped hold the family together through difficult years. Bruce later said he admired the simple consistency of watching her get up and go to work every day. When Bruce was a teenager, Adele scraped together the money for a new Japanese guitar. That Christmas morning became one of the memories he never forgot. In 1987, long after that guitar had helped carry him out of Freehold and onto the biggest stages in rock, Bruce recorded “The Wish.” The song remembers his mother getting ready for work, the guitar under the Christmas tree, and the two of them dancing together. It was finally released in 1998 on Tracks. Adele had given her son a guitar. Bruce spent the rest of his life showing her what it had made possible.

Jeff Beck walked away from a Yardbirds tour in 1966, and suddenly Jimmy Page was left carrying the guitar by himself. The band was crossing America on Dick Clark’s package tour, packed onto buses with other acts and playing short sets night after night. Beck later remembered the routine as miserable — sometimes traveling hundreds of miles just to play about 15 minutes. Jim McCarty remembered it getting even worse. Beck became so frustrated that he smashed a guitar in a dressing room. Then he disappeared from the tour. The Yardbirds had no choice but to continue without him. That put Jimmy Page, who had only recently joined the group, in the lead-guitar position. Chris Dreja stayed on bass, while Keith Relf and McCarty carried on beside them. Beck’s departure ended one of rock’s most fascinating guitar partnerships almost as quickly as it had begun. For Page, though, the road kept moving — and The Yardbirds were about to become something very different.

Stevie Ray Vaughan walked offstage after one last all-star blues jam. A few hours later, the guitar was silent forever. On August 26, 1990, Vaughan played Alpine Valley Music Theatre in Wisconsin on a bill with Eric Clapton. He was only 35, but by then he had already fought his way back from years of drug and alcohol addiction. His 1989 album In Step reflected that recovery and had won him a Grammy. At the end of the night, Vaughan returned to the stage with his brother Jimmie Vaughan, Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. Together they played an extended “Sweet Home Chicago.” Nobody knew it would be Stevie’s final performance. After the concert, Vaughan boarded a helicopter headed toward Chicago. Heavy fog covered the area. Shortly after takeoff, the helicopter struck a ski hill near the venue, killing everyone aboard. Stevie Ray Vaughan died on August 27, 1990. What makes that night hurt even more is where his life had finally reached. He wasn’t losing his battle anymore. He had gotten sober, rebuilt his career, and seemed to have years of music ahead of him. Then one ordinary flight home became the last journey he ever made.

Before Bob Seger became an arena star, one ugly night at a Wisconsin truck stop gave him the song that would explain what life on the road really felt like. Seger was still years away from his major breakthrough. He and his band were driving through the Midwest late at night when they stopped for food around 2 a.m. They all had long hair. Inside, several men began mocking them, repeatedly calling them “girls.” Seger later said the band walked away because they did not want a fight to end in a police report. The next night, Seger sat in the bathroom of a cheap Holiday Inn with an acoustic guitar. The humiliation from the truck stop was still with him, but so was something bigger — the exhaustion of endless highways, strange towns, cold restaurants and missing home. That feeling became “Turn the Page.” The studio version appeared on Back in ’72, but the song truly found its audience through Seger’s 1976 Live Bullet album. Years later, thousands of people would sing it back to him. But it began with a tired young band at two in the morning, deciding it was better to walk away than fight.

Billy Gibbons spent more than half a century standing beside the same two men. In just five years, he lost them both — and both left him with a reason to keep going. Dusty Hill had been ZZ Top’s bassist since 1970. When his health finally forced him off the road in 2021, longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis stepped in. Billy later recalled Dusty grabbing his arm and telling him, “Give Elwood the bottom end, and take it to the Top.” Dusty died on July 28, 2021, at 72. Billy and Frank Beard did what their friend had asked. They kept playing. Then, five years later, Billy had to face the same kind of goodbye again. Frank, the drummer who had kept ZZ Top’s beat for 56 years, died on August 17, 2026, at 77. In announcing his death, Billy said the band would “keep on keeping on” — because that was what Frank had wanted too. Four days later, ZZ Top returned to the stage in Austin. For most of Billy’s life, he could look across a ZZ Top stage and see Dusty and Frank there. Now neither man is waiting on the other side. But every time Billy walks back out and the music starts again, he is still carrying out the last thing both of them asked him to do.
