Ariana Grande Hosts SNL Holiday Special with Musical Guest Cher

Ariana Grande is set to return to Studio 8H as the host of Saturday Night Live on Saturday, December 20, leading the sketch comedy show’s highly anticipated holiday special. Joining her is none other than music legend Cher, who returns as a musical guest for the first time in nearly four decades.

This marks Grande’s third time hosting the iconic NBC series. She first hosted in 2016 while also serving as the musical guest, showcasing her comedic timing and vocal range. Most recently, she returned in October 2024. Now, the Wicked star is stepping into the spotlight once again, just in time for the season’s festivities.

The 79-year-old Cher, a Grammy-winning and Oscar-winning icon, last appeared on SNL in 1987, performing hits like “I Found Someone” and “We All Sleep Alone.” Her return to the SNL stage is being met with excitement and nostalgia, especially after the hilarious new promo released ahead of the broadcast.

In the teaser, shared on December 18, Ariana Grande and cast member Bowen Yang introduce themselves alongside Cher. Ariana stuns in a Bob Mackie-inspired yellow striped dress, a nod to Cher’s 1970s variety show fashion. Cher, dressed in a dark blue motorcycle jacket and black pants, looks timeless as ever. During the promo, Cher playfully slaps both Ariana and Bowen, delivering her famous line from Moonstruck, “Snap out of it!”—a cheeky callback to her Oscar-winning role. The moment leaves Ariana jaw-dropped and Bowen rubbing his cheek, as the two exclaim together, “Cher just slapped us!”

The playful sketch captured the internet’s attention and set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable holiday episode. The promo, which included additional holiday-themed sketches, aired just ahead of A Saturday Night Live Christmas, a two-hour special available for streaming on Peacock beginning Friday. It features a curated mix of classic SNL holiday sketches from the past.

Ariana Grande and Cher’s appearance on the December 20 live episode is already one of the most talked-about SNL moments of the season, bringing together multiple generations of music and comedy for a festive celebration. Fans can expect laughs, surprises, and perhaps even more iconic moments when the show airs live.
