WILLIE NELSON WAS SO BROKE HE TRIED TO SELL ONE OF COUNTRY’S BIGGEST SONGS FOR $500. TWO MONTHS LATER, HE GOT A $20,000 CHECK. In 1961, Willie Nelson was just another hungry songwriter in Nashville. He had a song called “Hello Walls” — about a lonely man talking to his walls, his windows, his ceiling after the woman he loved walked out. He brought it to Faron Young at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Faron heard it and recorded it. Then Willie did something that could’ve cost him everything. He was so broke he offered to sell the whole song to Faron for $500. Faron could’ve bought it right there. Instead, he loaned Willie the money and told him to keep his publishing rights. “Hello Walls” hit #1 on the country chart and stayed there for nine weeks straight. It crossed over to #12 on the pop chart. Less than two months later, Willie got a royalty check for $20,000. That one song changed how Nashville saw him. Patsy Cline soon cut “Crazy.” Ray Price took “Night Life.” But none of it happens if Faron Young takes the easy $500 deal instead of betting on a broke songwriter nobody was paying attention to.
