For his final album, Adiós, produced by his longtime bandmate Carl Jackson, he recorded “Funny How Time Slips Away” as a duet with the man who wrote it. Willie wrote that song in 1961, at 28, during the drive from Pasadena, Texas to a dance hall in Houston, in the same week he wrote “Crazy” and “Night Life.” Billy Walker put it on the country chart first, Jimmy Elledge’s version sold over a million copies, and Willie recorded his own in 1962 on his debut album. For fifty-six years it had been a song about two old lovers running into each other by accident. On Campbell’s record it became a song about two old men counting what was already gone. Adiós came out in June 2017. Campbell died on August 8. Three months to the day later, the duet won Musical Event of the Year at the CMA Awards, and his wife Kim accepted it alongside the two of their children who had played on the album. Willie turned 93 this April and is out on the road again this summer, still singing the song a young man wrote about time he only thought he was losing.
