Back in 2018, the Queen biopic surprised almost everyone. Despite a mixed critical response, the film went on to become a massive global success, earning more than $900 million at the worldwide box office.
The following year, its impact was cemented at the Academy Awards. The movie won more Oscars than any other film that year, including Best Actor for for his powerful portrayal of . With that level of success, it was inevitable that conversations about a sequel would soon begin.
The story told in Bohemian Rhapsody famously ends with Queen’s iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985. However, the band’s journey did not stop there. Queen continued for another six years with Freddie Mercury, who bravely battled AIDS while still creating music and performing whenever possible. For many fans, that later chapter of the band’s history feels equally emotional and powerful.
In 2022, Queen guitarist shared his thoughts on the idea of a follow-up film in an interview with the Daily Express. He described the prospect of working on a sequel as “exciting” and “very attractive,” and even responded positively to the suggestion that it could be titled The Show Must Go On.
A year later, Brian May expanded on those comments during a conversation with SiriusXM. He confirmed that discussions about a sequel are very real, even if nothing has been finalized yet. According to him, the biggest challenge remains the script.
“There’s truth to the fact that we talk about it,” May explained. “We’d love it — we’d love to make a sequel. It’s finding the right script. It actually took us 12 years to find the right script for the first one, so it’s no surprise that it’s not easy. There is a story there — an awful lot happened after the end of the Bohemian Rhapsody timeline — but whether it would make a film, I don’t know. We don’t want to make it unless we’re sure it’s going to work and move people in the same way as the original did.”
May also expressed his strong desire to reunite the original cast if a sequel ever moves forward. He praised the actors who portrayed the band members, calling their performances exceptional.
“It would be wonderful to get the same four guys back to play us,” he said. “They’re all absolutely stupendous. Rami is amazing, and Gwilym Lee, who played me, was incredible. He even fooled my kids — they genuinely thought I had voiced the part myself.”
For now, a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody remains uncertain. Still, with the band’s blessing, a wealth of untold stories, and a cast eager to return, the possibility continues to capture the imagination of fans around the world.
