BUFFALO, N.Y. — Downtown Buffalo surged with energy Friday night as two major cultural events collided, drawing thousands of fans, tourists, and theater lovers into the city center. It became one of the most vibrant nights Buffalo has experienced in years.
The biggest spotlight shone on legendary musician Paul McCartney, who arrived at KeyBank Center for a highly anticipated stop on his Got Back tour. Just a short walk away, the Broadway sensation Wicked celebrated its opening weekend at Shea’s Performing Arts Center, turning the entire district into a buzzing hub of music, theater, and excitement.
Fans moved to tears as Paul McCartney arrives
Outside KeyBank Center, fans lined up hours before the doors opened. Many held posters, vintage records, and cherished Beatles memorabilia, hoping for even a brief glimpse of the iconic performer.
When McCartney finally arrived and waved from his car, emotions swept through the crowd.
“I’ve loved him since I was like 5,” said Rosie Witschard, wiping tears from her face. “I can’t believe I actually saw him.”
Concert-goers traveled from across New York State — and even from across the country — making the event one of Buffalo’s largest live music moments of 2025.
‘Wicked’ sells out Shea’s as theater season ignites
Meanwhile, Shea’s Performing Arts Center was glowing with excitement as Wicked kicked off its opening weekend. Theater fans lined Main Street, thrilled to finally see one of Broadway’s most beloved productions return to Buffalo for an extended run.
“There’s so much happening tonight — it’s amazing to see Buffalo this busy again,” said Mary Bishop, who attended the show.
Local businesses enjoy a much-needed boom
The surge of visitors brought a welcome boost to nearby restaurants and bars, many of which saw their strongest sales night of the year.
Isaac Domingue, owner of Hombre Y Lobo, emphasized how essential nights like these are for downtown businesses.
“Without big nights like this, downtown would be a completely different place,” he said. “We depend on this energy — all the small businesses around the venues do.”
A night Buffalo hasn’t seen in years
For many Western New Yorkers, the evening felt like a turning point — a glimpse of a Buffalo revived with culture, nightlife, and eager visitors.
Between a global music legend, a blockbuster Broadway hit, and crowds of travelers filling the streets, locals said they hadn’t felt the city this alive in a long time.
For one unforgettable night, Buffalo shined as brightly as any major entertainment destination in the country.
